December 8th: Sean spent only onee hour in Jackson County saw 6 flushes (3 were roosters!).
December 2nd: Julia spent some time in Brown/Redwood Counties near Lamberton saw several hens flushed on public land and hunting on some private land which produced almost a dozen flushes! Also noting that grouse hunting has been extremely fun in the Mille Lacs WMA.
November 25/26th: Rob enjoyed hunting McLeod County and noted good cover in both WMA and WPAs. No flushes and it appeared some of the areas were hit hard earlier in the season. Report from around Slayton (Murray County) birds seen in both ditches near private land and flushes on public land.
Opening weekend: Minnesota hunters were getting birds in SW Minnesota - although numbers appear down and hunters needed to put in extra walking. Hunting success was certainly impacted by the crop harvest. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, only 7% of the corn harvest was complete. In comparison, this year's corn harvest is 2 weeks behind last year and 22 days behind average. The soybean crop was 45% harvested - also well behind last year. These crops are great cover for the birds so hunting conditions will improve as the harvest continues. Keys to success so far appear to be: hunting habitat that has both water and crops nearby; hunting the edges; concentratng your hunting on the golden hour before sunset. Good luck hunters and please update RCPF on your hunts!
